February 2010
6th – Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz – “25 years of making people happy” says the band’s own website – and this is certainly
true of the many visits to Boston Spa. The bands roots are based in the New Orleans style but laced throughout with
traditional jazz standards. All brought together by Mart’s inimitable introductions.
13th – Peter Frank’s All Star Dixielanders – if any band can make a session swing – this band can. The North of England’s finest including Martin Boyd, Dave Morrell, Ian Royle,
Chris Howse and, yes – Rod MacNamara on drums. The name says it all.
20th - Boston Spa Real Ale Festival – Regret No Jazz. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be there. Last year’s first festival was a roaring success – they ran out of beer on Saturday
afternoon. They have promised it won’t happen again. We’re happy to have a night off to support such a worthy endeavour and a proportion
of the surplus goes towards Village Hall refurbishments. Do come along and enjoy a “bevy” or two!
27th – Terry Brunt’s Dead Good Boys – we gather this band may be known in other quarters as the Tame Valley Stompers.
Be that as it may or call them what you will, the band features the redoubtable
Terry (plus trademark scarf and beret) on trombone in a six piece line up from
Lancashire and Cheshire. Traditional sounds a-plenty.
March 2010
6th – Mysto’s Hot Lips – as we remember it, our first ever foreign visitors. From Gothenburg in Sweden
with a new young trumpet player and led by the distinctive figure of trombonist,
Pider Avall, the band models itself - though not exclusively - on the traditional
sounds of Ken Colyer and Chris Barber. Revival jazz at its best. £8
13th – Ben Holder + Djongology – Recommend highly to us through the jazz club circuit in the Midlands, we welcome
the somewhat lighter sounds of this much acclaimed “string” group of violin, lead
and rhythm guitars and bass. Based around the hot club material of Grappelli,
Reinhart et al, you will nonetheless enjoy a hugely varied programme of swing,
traditional numbers and the standards. Do come along and support young musicians.
20th – James Evans Incredible String Four – now well known throughout the UK and the Continent for his energetic and adventurous
clarinet and saxophone playing, James is an alumni of Leeds College of Music and
some of his first professional gigs took place in Boston Spa.. Be that as it may,
he appears with his own quartet featuring Tom Kincaid on piano, Martin Wheatley
on guitar and Frank Grime on bass. Quality built in.
27th – Karen Sharp +Tommy Whittle + Roy Williams – and talking of quality, there won’t be a more musically desirable gig anywhere
in the UK on the night. Three world class musicians right here in Bozza together
with the superb backing group of Chris Holmes on piano, Ken Marley on bass and
John Perry on drums. If you have music in your soul – you’ll love this! £10
Sorry we had to cancel the January gigs
NB Scott Hamilton Quartet re-scheduled for the 14th August
