January 2012
7th – Savannah Jazz Band – the traditional start to the New Year as we invite Yorkshire’s premier jazz band to welcome us into 2012. Cracking traditional sounds from a band which always gives a full bore performance at Jazz in the Spa. Just be there early for an 8.00.pm start.
14th Kid Boyd Jazz Band – and who better to blow away any January blues than this long standing favourite of Boston Spa audiences. As varied a repertoire as any played with style and panache and driven along as always by our favourite drumming man, Rod MacNamara.
21st – Hot Fingers featuring ‘Spats’ Langham – a first appearance for this new trio led by Spats and described as “vintage acoustic string music”. The music of the 20s and 30s, the “French Coffee House” sound plus the standards and even Louis Prima – all rolled up into a wonderful evening’s entertainment.
28th – Alan Barnes + John Hallam + Tom Kincaid Trio – here’s a session to savour and to round off a superb January programme. Two of the UK’s finest reeds men in tandem plus the wonderful piano sounds of Tom Kincaid. It was nearly “house full” this time last year. We expect a similar reaction.
February 2012
4th - Millennium Jazz Band – making its annual appearance is this well known traditional jazz band from the Midlands. Let by clarinet player Matt Palmer, the band includes former members of the Eagle Jazz Band plus some younger blades – including Jack Cotterell on drums. Classic jazz from the 20s, 30s and 40s plus some rags, stomps and blues.
11th – White Eagles Jazz Band – Dave Kendall on trumpet leads this rejuvenated band which has caught the attention of our audience on recent appearances. Traditional sounds with a tinge of New Orleans from a driving front line including Steve Devine on reeds and Dave Johnson on trombone. Brian Herbert on banjo/guitar, Geoff “Just a Gigolo” Kitson on bass and Keith Daniels on drums complete the line up.
18th - Boston Spa Real Ale Festival – No Jazz. But you’ll still be most welcome as the Village Hall is transformed into a mecca for Real Ale enthusiasts with up to 30 different ales to sample. A proportion of the proceeds from the event are for Village Hall Refurbishment Funds.
Entry of £5 includes a festival glass and your first pint. 12 noon until 7.00.pm.
25th - Spirit of New Orleans – a Yorkshire band with a Lancashire residency – Delph on Fridays - and with a deserved reputation. Led by the hot trumpet of Dave Pogson, this is the talented group which emerged from the former Dave Donohoe band. It’s repertoire whilst rooted in a relaxed New Orleans style is wide ranging, distinctive and thoroughly enjoyable. Don’t miss this one.
